Kink Collective - Flagging in the Leather Community

Step into the language, history, and quiet power of flagging in the leather community. Join us for a collective workshop led by Calico, Cape Town’s resident bootblack, for an exploration of how a simple piece of fabric became a deeply meaningful system of communication, identity, and connection within leather and kink spaces. Bootblacks have long been regarded as custodians of leather history and culture, and this session draws on that lineage to ground flagging in its lived context.

We’ll unpack the origins of the hanky code, how it has evolved over time, and the nuances that often get lost in simplified charts. Beyond just “what colour means what,” this workshop will look at intention, consent, visibility, and how flagging functions in real-world spaces today. We’ll also touch on how to engage with flagging respectfully, whether you’re brand new, curious, or looking to deepen your understanding of leather culture.

Expect a mix of storytelling, practical insight, and open discussion in a space that welcomes questions and shared perspectives.
